For two years in a row, Moro and Alegria, from Buena Vista dance in Sydney, have been crownes Australia Bachata Champions. The Australia Bachata Championships 2010 where held on Saturday, 23th of October. Even though we interviewed them last year, they well deserve another interview as the reigning champions.

Juan Ruiz: First of all, Congratulations for winning the Australia Bachata Championships, two years in a row! This is a huge achievement! Tell us, what lessons did you guys learnt from last year competition (2009)?

Moro y Gaby: I don’t think we looked back at 2009, we just wanted to do a choreography which would be more challenging for us.

Juan: Your choreography looked very refresh and new from previous choreographies. What did you guys focus on for this year competition (2010)?

Moro y Gaby: Our focus was to prove that we are performers, we can achieve techniques, tricks and lifts. But our most exciting, challenging and fun part is always when we dance our favorite style …the DOMINICAN Style Bachata.

And you guys definitely shined on your choreography! Everybody loved the energy you guys showcase during your performance. Tell us, what is your secret? Do you have a pep-rally? Drink energy water or something like that? 🙂

Moro y Gaby: Moro & I believe in each other’s performance skills. We both know is 100% or nothing. In regards to energy, yes we also are extremely energetic and feed from each other, just in different times of the day, hahaha. Me energy starts as early as the birds get me up, and dies by 9pm…Moro’s energy starts from 5pm till 3am…

No special drink…I think is an ARIES thing…. 🙂

According to the Australian public, the level of performances for this year’s competition was very high. Do you think Bachata in Australia has improved from last year?

Moro y Gaby: Yes Bachata has definitely improved from last year, which is great for us… we are both very challenging people and we love to that Bachata is developing & growing…it only makes us improve. Also is interesting how the different styles are also changing.

What can we expect from Moro and Alegria for this New Year? Any new exciting projects?

Moro y Gaby: Yes, we are learning how to make things easier for students. I think students performances help them lots… and we also get time to fix their body movement (foot work is complicated but body movement is the hardest to achieve). Dominican Bachata is more difficult in many ways… with every step, the body movement is different. We want to focus in our students & also again spread our Dominican Style Bachata around Australia.

Any tips and advice you guys, the masters, that can give to the Bachata dancers out there?

Moro y Gaby: Our tip is ALWAYS: DANCE TO WHAT MUSIC TELLS YOU
DO NOT TRY TO PERFORM WHAT YOU LEARN IN CLASS IF MUSIC IS NOT ASKING YOU FOR IT… BEFORE YOU PICK A PARTNER, SYNCRONISE TO MUSIC.

If people want to learn Bachata from you guys, where can they find you?

Moro y Gaby: We teach Bachata classes on Tuesdays at 199 CLEVELAND ST- @ ACTT ACTORS COLLEGE. from 7-8pm beginners , 8-9 intermediates
