During all the years of the Australian Bachata Championships, there has been a team that has become a household in the competition: The Modus Vivendi team. They have won the Team Division 4 years in a row (from 2009 to 2012, and who knows how many more). Here I am, talking to Nestor Manuelian, the man behind such a great team.

JUAN: Nestor, first of all, congratulation on your team winning another championships! 4 years in a row, it is a big accomplishment!

NESTOR: Thank you Juan :) Yes 4 years in a row now and very happy to have accomplished that. Latin Dance Australia has also managed to win the Amateur Division 5 years in a row! Testament to our hardworking dancers :)

JUAN: Your team has been together for quite some time now. How long has the team MV been together and when did you guys start performing Bachata?

NESTOR: Modus Vivendi has been around for over 6 years now and I have been fortunate enough to have had great members all the way through. This particular team has been together for what is going onto 3 years now. They have started as part of my Modus Vivendi Project (student team), moved up as my first Pro/Am team, and are now on the verge of becoming my Pro Team. They are very very hard working. As been part of Modus Vivendi, they have always had to dance Bachata as well as Salsa.

JUAN: I’m sure every team member has his/her personality. How do you manage the team dynamics?

NESTOR: I love running teams :) Its the most difficult but rewarding part of my dancing career. Working with a team of dancers and managing personalities is very interesting indeed. The dynamics seem to change form rehearsal to rehearsal so I guess I manage one day at a time… Difficult…. but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

JUAN: How often did you train your team to get them ready for the Australian Championships?

NESTOR: My team doesn’t train for one event, they train all year round so are always ready to perform or compete. I run my team as a professional outfit of dancers and not just a regular student team. They love training and working hard … hence why the great results. They also won the Australian Salsa Open Latin teams with this BACHATA Choreo.

JUAN: Where did you get your inspirations / ideas to create the winning routine?

NESTOR: Katrina Quintal and I choreograph with a few factors in mind. 1 – We don’t limit our dancers to one style so you will notice that the choreos we do can go from Modern to Urban to Dominican from routine to routine and sometimes even with the same routine. That’s our style… We are very diverse and love to always keep people guessing. Last year this team won with a Bachatango, previous year MV won with an Urban Style Routine and previous to that something more traditional. Our inspiration is our imagination.

JUAN: What are the next projects / challenges for MV? What can we expect from them?

NESTOR: We are always on the path to bigger and better projects, events etc. Our biggest challenge is always our limits. We like to push as if there is none. And that’s what keeps us going so well :)

JUAN: if people want to see the MV team in action and/or learn Bachata from you. Where can people find you guys?

NESTOR: Modus Vivendi and its dancers are always somewhere performing, teaching, competing and dancing. If you join the Nestor and Katrina Fan Page we will keep you updated weekly. You can however join Katrina and I and the rest of the team at LATIN DANCE AUSTRALIA everyday of the week and of course EVERY WEDNESDAY for our BACHATA NIGHT!!

Winning Choreography

Every year, Bachateros.com interviews the winners of the Australian Bachata Championships, which happened this past October 2012. This year, I have the pleasure to talk to Moro and Romina, the winning couple of this year’s Championships. This is their first time they have won the championship as a couple, but it also the 3^rd time Moro has won the championships.

JUAN: First of all, congratulations guys on a well deserved victory. Since you guys are a new partnership in the Bachata world, tell us, when did you start dancing together?

MORO: we actually got together around March this year (2012), just before the Sydney Bachata Festival. We performed at the Festival with a routine that we were not fully happy with it, as we didn’t have enough time to prepare it.

ROMINA: Yes, we were not really happy with it, as we did the choreography in 2 weeks. It was our first time working together doing Bachata, and we still had good feedback from that choreography, so we continued training and working on our Bachata.

JUAN: You guys are indeed great dance partners! I know Romina you live in Melbourne, and Moro, you live in Sydney. How did you manage to train and work for the Championships?

MORO: Romina is crazy (laughs!) She is the one who flew from Melbourne to Sydney many times! Mama mia! I couldn’t have done that. I once told her that she needs to buy her own plane because of so many trips! But honestly, she did very good coming to Sydney very often.

ROMINA: This year has been a bit crazy as I had to travel pretty much almost every weekend to Sydney for work, and also Moro teaches every single day, so we had to find 1, 2 or 3 hours during the weekend to train.

JUAN: that’s even more inspirational that you guys managed to train together living in difference cities! Now tell me, where did you guys get the ideas, the inspiration for the winning routine?

MORO: Well, with Romina we decided to create something that we can feel and relate to it, so much of the moves came from us. Also, we wanted to make sure that our style represents the Domincan style, so we watched some videos to make sure we were going in the right direction.

ROMINA: we also like to watch a lot of people around the world, sometimes we see things that we like, but obviously we try to make sure our style and our flavor is there. But mainly, I give a lot of credit to Moro, because he has created his own style pretty much and I feel very lucky that I can work and choreograph with him because he has an incredible imagination and I fully trust him with his ideas, sometimes crazy ideas! J

JUAN: what can the public expect from Moro and Romina now? What are your next projects or challenges?

MORO: we definitely want to compete internationally, so we will be looking on travelling overseas representing Australia in different championships.

JUAN: that is great! Best of luck, I’m sure you guys will do very well! Final question, if people want to learn Bachata or any Latin dance style, where can they find you?

ROMINA: I teach in Melbourne in different venues.

MORO: My dance school is Buena Vista Dance in Sydney. We teach a variety of dance styles, from Cuban Salsa, Rumba, Rueda and of course, Dominican Bachata. (Feel free to add more information….)

Body movement if very important in Bachata, in fact, it is this body movement that makes our Bachata dancing so beautiful. Without body movement we will be just marching on the dance floor. In this bootcamp, we will focus on isolations, hip extensions, body leads and more!

Bachata performances are becoming very popular in the Latin Dancing industry. Every congress, event, party has a good number of Bachata shows! In these 2 hours, we will work on what makes a good Bachata show, and how to stand out on the stage making you look like a true Bachatero/a

On a previous article I wrote about the “benefits of dancing”, which are many, but didn’t talk about why somebody should start dancing! Instead of telling you many reasons why, I will focus on motivation and what motivates people on taking new activities.

Whilst some people find enjoyment being a couch potato :), playing online games, trying their luck with lottery or bingo (FoxyBingo.com), or doing other activities that don’t require much physical activities; on the other hand, other people enjoy outdoor activities, going to the gym and pushing their bodies and mind to learn new things.

The beauty of dancing is that you will not only learn how to dance, you will improve your body coordination, increase your hearing skills (as you will have to properly listen to music) and above all, you will be part of a friendly community of people (there will be always be a dancing community) So, if you are a person that is motivated by physical, intellectual and/or collective activities, you will find a great satisfaction in learning how to dance!

Have you asked your self, what motivates you to take on new activities? Whatever it is, I assure you that dancing will be a great fit for what you are looking for!
